Beyond Numbers: The True Benefits of STEM

From the outside looking in, it is easy to believe that STEM fields are no more than just symbols, formulas, experiments, and programming. Indeed, we are all taught the Pythagorean formula, how DNA works, and a wide variety of STEM concepts at a young age. Schools have shown us the dreaded hours of homework, loads of lectures, and pages of writing that come with being involved in STEM. Yet, if we take some time to explore the STEM world, delve into the parts we are interested in, there will be moments of victory, development, and unforgettable memories.

Personally, working within the STEM field has been no easy feat. However, the more I reflect, the more apparent it becomes that the moments in which I struggled the most were the same ones that made triumphs even more significant. Every late night that I spent debugging a program or solving practice problems that never seemed to end taught me the importance of perseverance. I built up the ability to push through even the toughest of days, to see the light in every tunnel. I knew that breakthroughs were only possible if I overcame the tough moments. Without even realizing it, STEM grew me as a person.

Not only did STEM change me as an individual, but it has also allowed me to form connections with people who are now heavily integrated into my life. Being able to share a passion, have the same interests, and work collaboratively has created extremely special bonds. My teammates from STEM competitions, who were total strangers before, have now become some of the people I am the closest to and talk about anything with. We certainly work together while we are competing, but these people are an important part of my life outside of STEM.

If one thing is for certain, it is that taking a chance to pursue your blooming interests in the STEM field will open doors to promising and exciting experiences.
