Most adults would consider rocket science close to impossible, let alone children doing it. Yet that is what happened at the All Girls STEM Society inaugural Virginia workshop, in which 18 eager young students gathered on April 7, 2016. Held at the Willard Model School in Norfolk, students in grades 3-5 took part in the AGSS Aerospace workshop, where they learned basic physics and built and flew their very own rockets. The workshop started at 3:15 pm, where they received a short, 15 - minute lecture on who the All Girls STEM Society is, as well as teaching
basic physics, such as thrust, drag, lift, etc and instruction on how to build their rockets. Utilizing only paper, tape and pvc pipes for shape, the students were able to create their amazing rockets, often decorated with loud colors and stickers. The students then began the construction process, breaking in the middle for a short trivia match, a series of 10 challenging questions about rocketry. Finally, the students were able to launch their rockets, bringing them out into the back of the school. Most launches were successful; the girls were very excited to see their creations take flight and most launched their rockets multiple times. The girls eagerly participated in 'races', launching their rockets and seeing which ones were able to fly highest. Overall, the girls left the workshop happy, clutching their new rockets, imbued with the new knowledge of physics and aerospace. Although the students came from various backgrounds and grade levels, one sentiment was shared between them all, and loudly voiced by one of the 3rd graders, "When will you [The All Girls STEM Society] be coming back again?"
