7th Annual All Girls Math Tournament

On April 25th, 2021, the All Girls STEM Society hosted its annual All Girls Math Tournament, which has been held in some form every year since our organization’s founding in 2014. By providing a girls-only math competition for over 100 girls in grades 3-8, our organization aims to create an environment where girls feel comfortable trying their best to solve problems, which often can be difficult in other math competitions which are typically dominated by men.

AGMT is composed of three rounds: the sprint round composed of 15 problems in 20 minutes, the target round composed of 5 problems in 10 minutes and a team round with three logic puzzles in 30 minutes where girls could collaborate to solve them. Girls were split into three grade divisions of 3-4th grade, 5-6th grade and 7-8th grade and worked in breakout rooms with volunteers to help them if they needed it. After about an hour of tricky, but fun problem solving the tournament was over. Before winners were announced, we had an amazing speaker, Ms. Farzaneh Orak, a software engineer, tell us about her experience as a woman in STEM and how she broke gender norms to find her own path in life. Her speech left the girls with inspiring messages of persevering through challenges and finding support structures, especially from other women in STEM. Huge thank you to Ms. Orak for her advice and her time!
