By Danica Chen, Del Norte High SchoolThe All Girls STEM Society hosted a chemistry workshop at the Carmel Valley Public Library on February 4th, 2018, teaching girls about surface tension and polarity with chromatography projects, lava lamps, dissolving M&M experiments, and power sailboats. A brief overview of several basic chemistry principles was presented, followed by instruction in the planned activities. One of the many projects taught in this event was the dissolving M&M experiment, which led to beautiful patterns of color that the girls created with their new chemistry wisdom and their own creativity. After each project concluded, the AGSS Chemistry Workshop ended as many AGSS workshops do: with each girl choosing their own small prize as they walk out the door, happy with their new experience not just for the entertaining activities but the knowledge they came away with.
