AGSS March Madness

Throughout the month of March, the All Girls STEM Society hosted their Spring Into STEAM Mathematical Origami workshop almost every week, leading up to the annual tournament on April 2nd. The three events were held on March 11th at the San Carlos Library for students from fifth to eighth grade, March 18th at Ocean Beach Library for students from third to fifth grade, and March 25th at North University Library for students from third to sixth grade. Overall, 89 students from 50 different schools decided to participate.

This is not the first time the All Girls STEM Society has hosted its origami workshops. Since the first origami workshop was held in 2016 in September, it has become one of the AGSS’s most popular workshops. At these events, young girls learn how to make fun origami designs, like cubes and ladybugs, while also learning the math behind it.

This event, like all AGSS’s events, was designed to encourage girls to pursue STEM fields, as women currently only make up one fourth of all STEM fields. Although students of all genders are allowed to participate, the organization hopes that their efforts will specifically close the gap between female scientists and their male counterparts.
The next Spring Into STEAM Mathematical Origami workshop will be held on May 13th at University Heights Library. Registration will open in May.
