AGSS - Robotics Workshop for the Nazareth School Girl Scouts

The Robotics Workshop for the Nazareth School Girl Scouts was held at the Mission Valley Library on January 7th, 2018. This workshop taught its participants to control Scribbler robots by learning drag-and-drop programming language.

​The workshop began with a presentation describing the basics of robotics and programming. Questions were spread throughout, and correct answers were rewarded with special prizes like pens or bookmarks. Afterwards, the girls programmed their robots with occasional help from volunteers, then watched their Scribblers at work, which drew unique shapes based on their designs.

This workshop was part of the AGSS’s long-running mission to promote STEM interest amongst girls, a demographic often underrepresented in STEM majors and fields. The high school volunteers that run the organization, with branches in California and Virginia, have reached out to girls from elementary to middle school since 2015, holding over thirty engaging math and science-related events designed to teach the participants important STEM concepts in fun and appealing ways. ​

The workshops have inspired girls from over 200 schools and over 25 school districts to find interest in such subjects, and this workshop is no exception. The programming skills and robotics knowledge the girls took away from the event are sure to benefit them throughout their lifetime.
